Starting July 1, 2025, significant updates are coming to Australia’s skilled visa program. If you’re planning to apply for a skilled visa, it’s critical to understand the changes — especially the increase in income thresholds across multiple visa categories. Let’s break down the key updates:
1. Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold (TSMIT) Increase
The Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold (TSMIT) will rise from AUD 73,150 to AUD 76,515 per year. This change affects applications for:
- Subclass 494 (Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional – Provisional)
- Subclass 187 (Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme) Note: These changes are pending legislation approval.
2. Core Skills Income Threshold (CSIT) Adjustment
For the Skills in Demand Visa and the Subclass 186 Employer Nomination Scheme, the Core Skills Income Threshold (CSIT) will also increase from AUD 73,150 to AUD 76,515. New nomination applications must meet either this new threshold or the Annual Market Salary Rate (AMSR) — whichever is higher.
3. Specialist Skills Income Threshold (SSIT) Update
The Specialist Skills Income Threshold (SSIT), relevant for the Specialist Skills Stream, will jump from AUD 135,000 to AUD 141,210 per year.
Important Notes:
- Effective Date: All these changes come into effect from July 1, 2025.
- Existing Visa Holders: If you already hold a skilled visa or have a pending nomination lodged before July 1, 2025, you are not affected by these new thresholds.
- New Applicants: Any new applications lodged after July 1, 2025, must comply with the updated salary thresholds.
Why Are These Changes Happening?
The Australian Government is adjusting these thresholds to:
- Ensure that skilled migrants’ wages keep pace with Australian wage growth.
- Prevent undercutting of the Australian labor market.
These changes are part of broader efforts to strengthen Australia’s skilled migration program and protect both migrants and local workers.
